If you have the many irrational concerns that plague OSX users with regard to updates, most of which seem self-inflicted to me, you should clone-Time Machine is not the same- your main drive before the upgrade so you can restore it if you have issues, real or imagined. If you are savvy enough to clone and restore your main drive you should not have any problems with the upgrade. A simple program like SuperDuper and a USB drive is all that is needed, although it takes considerable time, and you can check that you can boot off the USB drive, also slow, before updating your system.
